DAY 5
Before I started I finally realised "My god, I have a hobby!" With the frame and forx in, I wondered about what I should do next. I can't do the handlebars until I get a quill.
What it does is, it allows the stem (the bit with the 4 bolts on it) to grip the inside of the forks which thus means you can turn the forks. Anyway, I couldn't do that so I decided to do the cranks (the bit which connects the bottom bracket (the 'axle' which turns around as you pedal) to the pedals). I got a reasonably nice 1 piece crank from our rooting, which I've cleaned up nicely. Its simple stuff really. You firstly make sure the pedals are off. Post 1 set of bearings on the crank so that the housing/cage of the bearings is up against the sprocket/chainring/cog/gear). Then you feed the left hand side of the crank (side without sprocket/chainring/cog/gear) throught the right hand side, so that the sprocket/chainring/cog/gear will end up against the bottom bracket on the right hand side. This is because it's British standards 6120 and I know this cos I've read it =8¬P Make sure the cups are greased well though before you do the other side. Similarly, post a set of bearings over the arm so that the cage is facing outwards. Then screw the cup on, followed by the washer, followed by the locknut. Then it's all a case of getting the 'happy medium' between wobble and smoothness. It'll take a while, but when it's done its soo cool :D. |
